Smithereens

Last night, while walking to dinner, Jeremy and I heard a large explosion.

Me: Was that a bomb?
Jeremy: Probably.

We kept walking. Later, we found out that the Taliban had claimed responsibility for an attack, which involved the Serena Hotel (the premiere "luxury" hotel here, which is often used by our political officers for meetings), a suicide bomber, three guys with Kalashnikovs, and several dead. Not ever having been out of the compound except at the airport and Camp Eggers, I have no idea where the hotel is in relation to the Embassy, but I guess it was near enough that we could hear a guy blowing himself to dust.
